UNITED NATIONS, May 16 () -- A group of UN military observers who stayed overnight in the Syrian town of Khan Cheikhoun, following a bomb blast which damaged some of their vehicles, have returned to their team site, a UN spokesperson said on Wednesday."None of the observers were injured or hurt, they stayed in the area overnight and they were able, this morning, to leave and go back to their headquarters in Hama," the spokesperson for the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), Hassan Siklawi, said in an interview in Syria with the UN News Center, the news website of the 193-member body. The three damaged vehicles were part of a four-vehicle UNSMIS convoy which was in Khan Cheikhoun, near Hama, when an improvised explosive device was detonated nearby around mid-afternoon local time on Tuesday. Siklawi added that the damaged vehicles would be recovered.UNSMIS, authorized by the UN Security Council last month, is made up of up to 300 unarmed military observers and deployed for an initial period of 90 days. It has two mandated tasks: to monitor the cessation of armed violence in all its forms and to monitor and support the implementation of a six-point peace plan put forward by Kofi Annan, the joint special envoy of the United Nations and the League of Arab States for Syria. The crisis in Syria, which began in March 2011 as a protest movement similar to those across the Middle East and North Africa, has claimed over 9,000 lives, mostly civilians, and displaced tens of thousands.Siklawi also noted that the number of observers on the ground has reached 263, with 71 civilian staff, bringing the total number of UNSMIS personnel to 307."We're deployed in many places, such as Homs, Hama, Idlib, Deraa, Aleppo and Deir el Zour. There's also a team working in Rif Dimashq," Siklawi said. "The military observers and the civilian staff belong to 53 countries."Annan's plan calls for an end to violence, access for humanitarian agencies to provide relief to those in need, the release of detainees, the start of inclusive political dialogue that takes into account the aspirations of the Syrian people, and unrestricted access to the country for the international media.
SANAA, June 12 () -- The Yemeni army on Tuesday retook control of the last two strongholds of al-Qaida militants in the southern Abyan province, including the provincial capital Zinjibar and strategic Jaar town, demonstrating the biggest victory against the terrorist network after more than one month of fierce battles.Abdul Salam Muhammad, head of the ABAAD center for strategic studies, said clearing the militants from Abyan convinced all that the unified army can fight illegal armed groups and protect Yemen from all dangers, including terrorism."Tuesday's gains in Abyan were only the first-fruits of the determination of the new government to put an end to serious challenges," he said, urging to accelerate restructuring the army and security forces in Yemen. Some other observers, however, said retaking control of Abyan never implies an end to the battle with Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), and warned that the country now should prepare for "widespread suicide bombings."Muhammad Saif Haider, a researcher specialized in the Islamic and al-Qaida issues, said al-Qaida has proved in recent years that it can reseed and re-emerge easily in Yemen. "As long as senior AQAP leaders remain at large, regrouping will be easy and crucial for AQAP," he said."To eradicate militancy from Yemen, it is very important to kill all senior leaders of AQAP and combat all reasons for regrouping," he said, "That will be the fatal blow."In the meantime, militants are expected to change their tactics, amid reports that their sleeper cells have already started recruiting insurgents in other provinces, including those near Abyan, Haider said."They will carry out suicide operations in many provinces to target forces, offices, civilians and populated areas such as markets. Militant groups will be ready to do the dirtiest things to re-emerge," he continued. The defense ministry said the forces have not only cleared militants from Zinjibar, Jaar and Shuqra, but also targeted those running away, killing many of them and destroying their cars and boats.Roads have been reopened and teams have started to remove mines in the towns to pave the way for the return of hundreds of thousands of families who fled due to the war, it said.Over the past few months, the army has stepped up the offensive against al-Qaida to recapture key towns which were seized last year in the south.Hundreds of al-Qaida militants, including senior leaders, have been killed, and more recently the authorities have revealed a special plan to hunt and target militants in five provinces adjacent to Abyan.Mansour al-Soroi, a journalist, said the common tactic of al- Qaida is to reseed and regroup and the social nature of Yemen boosts this very much."In provinces adjacent to Abyan, such as Shabwa, Jawf and Marib, all communities are tribal and they support the groups, which hide under the cover of religion," he said, "Yemen was a suitable place for al-Qaida after blows in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Therefore, if militants are defeated in one area, they will regroup in another."Al-Sorori said militant groups will think of deadliest suicide attacks, just like the one that targeted a parade rehearsal in the capital Sanaa in May.The suicide bombing, which killed almost 100 and injured hundreds of members of the central security forces, occurred while al-Qaida was receiving devastating blows in Abyan. The army continued to advance on the militants after this attack, with experts arguing that the move has been linked with the overall situation, at a time when Yemen is preparing for a comprehensive national dialogue.Haider said the war against al-Qaida came within the efforts aimed at reshaping Yemen's political landscape and reducing the influence of the Jihadist groups ahead of the dialogue expected in the coming few months. The intensified war on al-Qaida should also be linked to the ongoing efforts to reform the armed and security forces because the army wants to restore its role and job across the republic, he said.
