RUINS OF 800-YEAR-OLD TAOIST TEMPLE DISCOVERED IN EAST CHINA Archaeologists have discovered ruins of a Taoist temple in east China's Jiangxi Province that is believed to have a history of more than 800 years. Perched on the roof of the Mt. Xiangshan with an altitude of 1,219 meters in the Chongren County, the temple ruins cover an area of about 5,538 square meters, said Yang Yuexiong, of the county's cultural relics survey office. According to relics collected at the site and historical documents, archaeologists believe the temples was built before the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1370), Yang said. Archaeologists said it was a "mysterious" building complex as they found the temple ruins were made up of stones of irregular forms that had no mud, lime or any other adhesive material between them, Yang said. In addition, colossal rocks weighing up to 500 kg or more can be seen everywhere in the complex, and archaeologists wondered how the ancient workers lifted them to the mountain roof without the help of modern machines, he said. "We need to further investigate the complex and find answers to the puzzles," he said. 1 2 3 1 2 3
