NAIROBI, Dec. 26 () -- Kenyan troops killed five Somali militants and injured eight others when they struck southern Kismayo on Sunday, military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir confirmed on Monday.Chirchir said the attack took place at Kuday, south of Kismayo which had been the capital of the autonomous state of Jubaland under the administration of the Juba Valley Alliance (JVA) since the late 1990s, Wamaitho and Deida Adhi areas of Lower Juba."The Kenya Defense Forces yesterday (Sunday) hit targets in Kuday, south of Kismayu, Wamaitho and Deida Adhi in Lower Juba in very successful attacks. Kuday attack left five Al-Shabaab killed, 8 critically injured, one technical and skiff destroyed," Chirchir said in his official Twitter account. The military spokesman said the Wamaitho and Deida Adhi attacks left over 150 casualties but could not confirm the number of deaths on Al-Shabaab."Peace loving Somalis are requested to avoid Al-Shabaab camps as KDF/TFG (Transitional Federal government of Somalia) engages the common enemy," Chirchir cautioned.Military sources said the Kenyan forces had managed to infiltrate Al-Shabaab ranks, hence the relative precision with which they pick their targets without incurring heavy causalities, so far Kenya has lost ten soldiers -- five in helicopter accident and five combat.Kenya is currently engaged in the fight against the militia group in southern Somalia where it has been registering impressive gains and extending humanitarian assistance to the local population. The latest development comes as security forces at the border points are grappling with threats posed by the insurgents who have been laying landmines mainly targeting police and soldiers patrolling the Somalia border. The East African nation has been beset by a spate of grenade and landmine attacks since it launched cross border incursion into neighboring Somalia last month to pursue the al Qaeda allied Al- Shabaab militant group.Since the Kenya military incursion into Somalia several attacks believed to have been carried out by Al-Shabaab have occurred in Mandera, Wajir, and Garissa and Dadaab districts of northern Kenya even as the military reports gains against the Islamist group by capturing their military bases and killing scores of them.
KHARTOUM, Feb. 19 () -- U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Princeton Lyman on Sunday reiterated Washington's keenness to ease the standing tensions between Sudan and South Sudan, expressing hope that the two countries would avoid whatever might exacerbate the tensions.Lyman held talks on Sunday with Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Karti, focusing on the relations between Khartoum and Washington as well as the outstanding issues between Sudan and South Sudan."Washington is keen on easing the tension between the two countries and we hope the two countries would avoid all acts that are likely to contribute to increasing the tension," said Lyman, according to a press statement by Sudan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Lyman attributed the failure of the recent negotiations between Khartoum and Juba in Addis Ababa to what he termed as weak confidence between the two sides, expressing hope that they would manage to overcome the barrier of distrust in the coming rounds of talks. The U.S. envoy further noted that his country welcomes the Sudanese government's intention to evaluate the humanitarian situation in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states via involving regional and international organizations, urging Khartoum to implement that.He said that Washington meant to send a positive message to Sudan by giving the first signal in supporting the steps of exempting Sudan's debts via including that in the U.S. budget for 2013.U.S. President Barack Obama has recently asked the Congress to endorse the coming U.S. budget bill including possibility for Sudan to benefit from exempting its debts to the United States.Obama, however, said that Sudan would benefit from the exemption only if it had fulfilled its commitments to refraining from supporting terrorism, implemented the peace agreements and avoided violation of human rights.Sudan, for its part, said it had fulfilled all of its commitments, while the ruling National Congress Party regarded the U.S. president's promises to exempt Sudan's debts on conditions that it implements the peace agreements as "worthless promises."

HARARE, Feb. 23 () -- Zimbabwe's police chief, Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri, on Thursday warned those who are planning to destabilize the southern African country by inciting people to stage a mass action.Chihuri told a police pass-out parade in Harare that law enforcement agents are aware of plots by a certain political party outside the inclusive government to destabilize the country. He said the concerned political party is allegedly distributing flyers inciting people to engage in a mass action next month and not to participate in elections, adding that police will not helplessly watch the country's peace being disturbed but will deal with the culprits according to the laws of the country."Right now we are aware that there is a small political party outside the government which wants to start mass protests in early March 2012. They have planned to start from Africa unity square employing dirty and desperate tactics such as hunger strikes and mass protests. The agenda is to try and overthrow the government," Chihuri said. The police chief said the organization's mandate of maintaining peace and security can only be achieved by increased police visibility, referring to the complains on too many police officers manning the country's roads."Let me state categorically that the reckless and misguided call to remove the traffic police from the roads is a non-starter. By nature of their job, police operate from out there and not in offices. The police must be vigilant and must continue to be out there to ensure total peace," he said.
